Jaya Bachann Criticizes Tirath Singh Rawat’s Sexist Comment

Such statements don’t befit a CM- Jaya Bachann(Actor and Politician) denounced CM Tirath Singh Rawat for his remarks made on ripped jeans and Sanskaars. Speaking to ANI, she said, “Such statements don’t befit a CM. Those on higher posts must think & make public statements. You say such things in today’s times, you’ll decide who’s cultured and who’s not based on clothes! It’s a bad mindset and encourages crimes against women.”On Tuesday at a workshop organised by the state commission for protection of child rights, Rawat criticised women for wearing ripped jeans. He had also described the attire of a woman who sat next to him on a flight. He said that the woman was wearing ripped jeans, boots and bangles and had two children travelling with her. “She runs an NGO, goes out in the society and has two children, but she wears jeans ripped at the knees. What values will she impart?” the minister had asked. He had further added that, women consider themselves to be big shots while wearing ripped jeans and that if they don’t find ripped jeans in the market, they use a pair of scissors to cut the jeans they have.Women rights activists and the opposition Congress on Wednesday criticized Uttarakhand chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s comments. Congress leader Garima Dasauni said being the chief minister does not give Rawat a right to speak on anyone’s lifestyle choices. “It was a highly derogatory statement… He has no right to speak on anyone’s attire or food habits…”. Heera Jangpangi, a women’s rights activist, said the statement is completely unwelcome. “Nobody has the right to … [speak about] one’s attire,” she said. “It is just a sign of patriarchal mindset.”Legend Amitabh Bachann’s granddaughter Navya Nanda poses in against CM’s remarks. Taking to Instagram, Navya shared photos where she is wearing ripped jeans and also gave her response to the statement. She wrote, “Change your mentality before changing our clothes because the only thing shocking here is the message comments like this send to society.” “I’ll wear my ripped jeans. Thank you. And I’ll wear them proudly,” Navya wrote, captioning the photo. Women are flooding social media with pictures that show them in distressed denim to protest against controversial remarks. While Twitter was flooded with reactions all through yesterday, #RippedJeansTwitter became one of the top trends on the microblogging platform this morning as people used the hashtag to share pics in ripped jeans. Actor Gul Panag shared a selfie that shows her in distressed jeans. Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote: “The country’s ‘Sanskriti’ & ‘Sanskaars’ are impacted by men who sit and judge women and their choices”.
