Do Ripped Jeans Equal to Ripped Sanskaars?
Uttarakhand’s CM Tirath Singh Rawat has been receiving a lot of criticism on all major social platforms lately.Tirath Singh Rawat has been in the front face due to his remark on women’s clothing in a recent event where he addressed how wearing ripped jeans is not Indian culture but aping for the west. He said, during a workshop organised by the state commission for protection of child rights, “She was wearing boots, jeans ripped on the knees, and several bracelets. She had two children travelling with her. Her husband is a professor at JNU. You run an NGO, wear jeans ripped at the knees, move about in society, children are with you, what values you will teach?”.“Showing bare knees by wearing ripped jeans just to look like rich kids is the value given now which is just a race towards westernisation when the Western world today is following us. Ripped jeans pave the way for societal breakdown and is a bad example parent set for children,” he further added.Women rights activists and the opposition Congress on Wednesday criticised Uttarakhand chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s comments. Congress leader Garima Dasauni said being the chief minister does not give Rawat a right to speak on anyone’s lifestyle choices. “It was a highly derogatory statement… He has no right to speak on anyone’s attire or food habits…”. Heera Jangpangi, a women’s rights activist, said the statement is completely unwelcome. “Nobody has the right to … [speak about] one’s attire,” she said. “It is just a sign of patriarchal mindset.”Legend Amitabh Bachann’s granddaughter Navya Nanda poses in against of cm’s remarks. Taking to Instagram, Navya shared photos where she is wearing ripped jeans and also gave her response to the statement. She wrote, “Change your mentality before changing our clothes because the only thing shocking here is the message comments like this send to society.” “I’ll wear my ripped jeans. Thank you. And I’ll wear them proudly,” Navya wrote, captioning the photo.Women are flooding social media with pictures that show them in distressed denim to protest against controversial remarks.
