Eight members of India’s boxing team on a tour of Turkey have contracted corona.  It also includes three players.  Those members of the team who are negative have returned home and those who have been corona have been quarantined in Istanbul.
Gold medalists of Commonwealth Games Gaurav Solanki (57kg), Brijesh Yadav (81kg), and Prayag Chauhan (71kg) were found to be corona-positive last week.  That is why they had to remain quarantined in Istanbul even after the competition ended on March 19.  Apart from this, coaches Dharmendra Yadav and Santosh Birmol, physio Shikha Kedia and Dr.  Umesh, video analyst and physiotherapist Nitin Kumar have also been infected with the corona.
India’s 13-member boxing team had gone to Istanbul to participate in the Bosphorus tournament.  Nikhat Zareen (51 kg) and Gaurav Solanki (57 kg) won bronze medals for India in the competition which started on March 15.
“These are unprecedented times and 8 of our team members including three boxers and five support staffs were COVID positive and as per the protocol of the host country the players were in quarantine until cleared to travel,” Boxing Federation of India Secretary General Hemanta Kalita said. “Of these, 7 members have been cleared to travel today. They will be reaching India tomorrow. One member, however, is still COVID positive and will be staying back in Istanbul until further clearance,” he added.Attachments area
