Anil Deshmukh: From Katol to Politics!
Anil Vasantrao Deshmukh is a well-known Indian politician from Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Currently, he is serving as the Cabinet Minister for Home Affairs in the Maharashtra State Government led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He was born on 09 May 1950, and now aged 70, as of 2020. He was born and brought up in a middle-class family in Vad Vihira village near Katol in Nagpur district, Maharashtra, India. He completed his early schooling from Katol High School in Katol, Nagpur. After that, he enrolled himself at the College of Agriculture, Nagpur University from where he completed his Master of Science degree in Agriculture. Since childhood, he was inclined towards politics and social works and always wanted to pursue his career in politics and wanted to do something for society. Anil Deshmukh has been a member of the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after winning the election from the Katol constituency. He was a member of the active politics in Maharashtra since 1995, and through his career of 25 years, he served at different government departments and was involved in many campaigns started by the State Government of Maharashtra.
He started his political career as a chairman of Nagpur Zilla parishad. Later he won the state assembly election from a Katol seat as an independent candidate in 1995 and became the Member of legislative Assembly of Maharashtra. He later won back to back from the same constituency till 2014. In 2014, he lost the Katol seat to his nephew Ashish Deshmukh after ruling for years in that constituency. He became Minister of state in 1995 in BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government under the profile of Education and Culture. Later he joined national Congress party in 1999 and presented as a Minister of State under the profiles of School education,Information and Public Relations and Sports and youth welfare. In 2001 he was promoted as a cabinet minister in the state government and served at different government departments till 2014. Again in 2019 in Maharashtra Assembly elections he won the Katol constituency as an NCP candidate. He was appointed as the Home Minister of Maharashtra in 2019 when the Mahavikas alliance of NCP, Congress, and Shiv Sena came in power under the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He is also the Guardian Minister of Gondia district.Some of the Controversies related to Deshmukh are as, he was recently in limelight when he stated the case of Sushant Singh Rajput was bring up as suicide and was politicised for political gains. He also made the demand to transfer the Sushant Singh Rajput case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. He added that Mumbai Police has started the investigation in the case and the case was properly handled by the Mumbai Police. Moreover, earlier Deshmukh also ruled out every request for the CBI team in the Sushant Singh Rajput case and stated that Mumbai Police will continue to investigate the matter. Now the recent headline about Deshmukh is that he asked former crime branch officer to collect money from bars, restaurants and hookah parlours in the city. The former police chief wrote that suspended Crime Branch officer Sachin Vaze told him that the minister had asked him to collect Rs 100 crore every month through illegal channels. He levelled the allegations in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, days after being removed from his post
