Home Minister Anil Deshmukh Resigns after HC Orders CBI probe

Anil Deshmukh who had been allegedly accused by Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh in the name of extortion, has resigned from his post of Home Minister, soon after Bombay High Court ordered CBI to complete preliminary investigation in the case of ‘extortion racket’.

Anil Deshmukh resigned as Maharashtra Home Minister, in wake of the HC observing that there can be no independent probe into allegations if it is handed to Mumbai Police, which is headed by the Home Minister. Bombay High Court has ordered to complete the investigation in next 15 days.

In order to respect the high court’s decision, Anil Deshmukh went to meet veteran leader Sharad Pawar and expressed his willingness to step down from the position. The NCP Chief told him the go ahead. Therefore, he submitted the resignation to the CM, said by NCP Chief Spokesperson and minority affairs minister Nawab Malik.

Soon after the HC decisions, a meeting took place at Silver Oak between NCP Chief Sharad Pawar,  Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, and party MP Supriya Sule. The Issue was thoroughly discussed and concurrence was that it would be embarrassing for the NCP & MVA government if the home Minister would be questioned by the CBI in relation with the probe, said by the NCP leaders.

The decision by the high court was taken after a petition filed by Dr. Jaishri Patil on Monday. After this, as it is going against his morality, Anil Deshmukh stated &  sent his resignation to the CM Uddhav Thackeray. He also posted a copy of his resignation letter on twitter.

Right after this news, opposition leaders came and welcomed this decision. However, Devendra Fadnavis said, “if there is money laundering or any money trail involved, the enforcement directorate may also come into picture. The alleged involvement of is just the tip of the iceberg. I believe many heavyweights from the ruling parties are involved into the entire case. Many big names will come to the light as the investigation by the central agencies begins.”

Significantly, Anil Deshmukh’s resignation letter reads, “The High Court asked the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry while hearing a petition filed by Dr..Jaishri Patil today (Monday). In the wake of the court’s decision I don’t feel this morally right to continue on this position of Home Minister. Hence, I have decided to step down from this position on my own. Please accept my resignation.”
